Welcome! And Remembering…

There’s not much here yet, but just wait.

You’ll notice a link category at the upper right called “Blog Stuff.” The name may change (it’s what WordPress calls “Pages”), but these are extras, single pages outside of the flow of the blog. They’re actually dynamically generated like this page you’re reading now, but they stand alone. I can put just about anything in this form and probably will. If you’re curious, you can read a bit about the header image and other things at “About FarrFeed.” Ah, that picture. Yes, that’s me at Tolchester Beach. And the piece to the right is where we live now in the terrible high desert.

I like seeing myself at two or three years old. Reminds me that a lot of my old friends in MD may not know the history of my roots in Chestertown. But there are bird-pooped gravestones with “FARR” engraved on them at the back edge of the C’town cemetery, adjacent to the college (my uncle, aunt, and father all went to Washington College). The family came to the Shore from West Virginia in 1921, in fact, on a freaking horse-drawn wagon. My grandfather was an early dropout: after clerking a while for the B & O, he moved to Kent County to grow turnips! I kid you not. Wanted to be independent and live a simpler life. Little did he know — the community sometimes disparaged his stance and made things hard for him — but at least he tried.

I’m bring this up now because I want to write about it all. In preparing the ground for what may come, I want everyone to know that when I arrived in C’town in ’75, I wasn’t just an emigrant from Texas, I was returning to a childhood stomping ground, the land of my father and grandparents. (I can remember scenes from the early ’50s that would blow your mind…) My roots on the Eastern Shore go back way before those of many of the friends I left, in fact. I wonder if they know.

John,

Beautiful look for the new blog. Uncluttered, elegant. I look forward to some new content, once you’re back at 100%. Nasty stuff, hernia surgery, I know. You’ve been missed.
