Inconvenient Truth

in Earth

Yes, we saw the movie. It was Thursday night, and the theater was packed.

As movies go, this was very well done. When you consider that you’re basically watching Al Gore give a glorified slide show about global warming and it isn’t the least bit boring, you have to give the producers credit. I didn’t learn anything new, but the presentation was excellent and very moving. The before and after pictures of the disappearing glaciers were depressing and sad. I don’t see how anyone can help but be significantly alarmed and upset after seeing this movie. The computer animations of how high the water would rise if the Greenland ice cap slid into the sea were also effective, but I wanted to see more of them. Where we used to live on Maryland’s Eastern Shore (see previous post), a 20-foot rise in sea level would be catastrophic. Simply put, much of that part of the world would disappear.

By all means see the movie. And you know, I really do admire Al Gore. Not only has he been serious about this particular issue for a long time, he’s been doing something about it, trying to change minds and hearts, one person at a time. I mean, he really does get it. He digs the Earth. He doesn’t have to do this work. He could take his money, go back to the farm, and to hell with everybody else. But he isn’t doing that. Way to go, Big Al. What a different world we might have had if we had counted all the votes.

UPDATE: Be sure to see the following post, above. Billmon has a different take on Gore’s doggedness. The cynicism is bracing, too.
