See, one really can’t write about this stuff any more with a straight face or without rending one’s garments. This has been happening every recent election cycle. Case in point: Arianna says the Democrats are running on the economy this year. Iraq? What’s that?? TORTURE??? Wazzat?! SHREDDING THE CONSTITUTION??? Bah.
It staggers the mind. It squashes the heart like a boot falling on a ripe plum. The Democratic party leadership is completely silent on the defining moral test of our brief moment in the sun. These guys deserve to lose only marginally less than the Republicans, burdening GOTV efforts with an almost unbearable cynicism. Maybe sufficient numbers of disgusted Americans will vote to throw the bastards out regardless. But it’s hard to see how, given the “opposition” party’s lack of the kind of righteous passion expressed by ordinary citizens every single day. [NOTE: there's life in Bill Clinton yet. Watch for the Fox News interview with Chris Wallace...]
Speaking of the rest of us, however, there is another angle. Check this out:
…the fact is — we were made for these times. Yes. For years, we have been learning, practicing, been in training for and just waiting to meet on this exact plain of engagement. I cannot tell you often enough that we are definitely the leaders we have been waiting for, and that we have been raised since childhood for this time precisely.
The author’s identity may surprise you. The language of the rest of the piece may turn you off — I have reservations myself — but aside from pimping hope, she’s close to the mark. “We are definitely the leaders we have been waiting for…” I like that. We certainly must be: I don’t see them anywhere else!
Snow on the mountain, yesterday evening view!
Cosmologically speaking, this would explain an awful lot. And if you need reassurance that the universe is inherently in a state of perfect balance, well there you go. Unfortunately, most of us consciously operate in linear time, and our startlingly brief geological millisecond of that action is in need of a severe correction. Who doesn’t feel it? Balance isn’t static. Evil never triumphs, having within it the proverbial seeds of its own destruction, but the collateral damage sucks.
Never mind the provocations and forget about hope. I think the situation requires a ferocity of inner discipline. (As soon as I get ahold of some, I’ll let you know.) For now I have to build an instant straw bale greenhouse, because there’s snow on the mountain and it’s gonna fucking freeze our geraniums.
Rock & roll helps, too, so crank it up.
UPDATE: greenhouse built! All it took was about $30 worth of straw bales and plastic and several hours work. Area enclosed is a little smaller than 3 x 3 x 9 feet. Pictures soon. Yes, the geraniums are inside now, along with potted basil and parsley. Put a big wide pot of purple petunias in there too. Not trying to grow anything in this little greenhouse, just keep some flowers and herbs alive as long as I can. Hell, if it works, I’ll grow some salad greens and start plants for spring planting. If it doesn’t work, I have a lot of straw to use for mulch.
