West o' the Gorge

The sun came out today, which changes everything.

We were in a little shop run by someone we know who lives across the gorge. [insert whistling wind sound here] She described the winter vistas outside her window, and we just had to take a little ride. I actually got my ’87 Ford F-150 out of the driveway, too, so we went in that. I don’t know about you, but I always feel better in a big ol’ truck with tools, water, and a bed when I’m out out this way.

Rio Grande Gorge Bridge at 3:00 p.m. today

Yes, that’s U.S. Highway 64 in the middle of the afternoon about seven miles WNW of what most would call Taos, looking at Taos Mountain with what I call a “ring cloud” around it. I just love the mountain/cloud interface. That may be my favorite part of living here, seeing the way earth and sky relate.

There wasn’t a breath of wind today, and the temperature stayed mostly in the 20s all day long under a full sun. Under those conditions, the snow evaporates (sublimates). It looks like steam rising from the ground. Up in the mountains where it’s colder and there’s a lot more snow besides, you get a lot of water vapor, which equals clouds. There won’t be clouds anywhere else sometimes except those clinging to the mountains. It’s the coolest damn thing. Naturally I have better pictures of what I’m talking about than the above, but I wanted to post this to show how awful the traffic is. Look for a full series of these at FotoFeed starting tomorrow or the next day, unless something more whoop-dee-doo comes along first.

I know I’ll have to say more about this trip, though. We saw llamas, earthships, and a really fine ranch gate, oh yeah.

No matter how (or from where) you look at it John…it truly is “Heaven’s Window” !! Next trip my wife’s challenge to overcome one of her life long fears is to walk to the center of the gorge bridge and look down…can’t wait!!

and can’t wait for the next round of Foto feed pix you mentioned too!!

Seems weird to think that 20 degrees with sun is a Lovely day, but after your last couple, bet it was just gorgeous!! Stay safe … and warm! Steve
