I feel a power coming on.
Don’t ask me what it is or where it’s from, but I feel it. You know what I mean, when it seems like something’s gonna bust wide open? Nothing is under control, nor could it ever be. All anybody has to do is just keep breathing. I feel calm and wide awake. Watch out, though: the tiger’s gonna jump out of the closet when you least expect it, and he’s hungry for idiots.
Picuris Peak & clouds (Sunday evening)
The weather here seems like it’s crazy. It still hasn’t gotten what you’d call warm. Yesterday it got up to 70, so they tell me, with a low of 37 — normal, actually. A year ago on that date the high was 84 with a low of 37. The year before that (2005), it was 89 degrees F. with a low of 44! No wonder we feel cheated. The mornings start off partly cloudy and it looks like it’s going to be a great spring day. By noon the front door and back door are open in anticipation of the two minutes of 70+. But huge thunderheads form over the mountains, and by early afternoon they’re pushing in and drop the temperature 20 degrees. Most Southwestern thunderstorms are huge but never seem to do much except give you goosebumps and start forest fires. A deluge is a quarter of an inch, if that, and often the rain passes overhead without reaching the ground. Somehow this year enough has made it through that we get wet almost every day, but all the clouds sure make it cold. Lately, it’s been like Scotland.
Speaking of which, the terrible high desert is really green. Most people let the grasses and weeds grow. I heard someone say, ” It’s nice to see the green. In a few weeks everything will be brown, and I can cut it down then.” Yeah, right. Anyway, at this rate, it might not turn brown soon. All this grass, it’s something different in the immediate environment. What does this portend? (“Brush fires!” Well, maybe.) The daily rains are the ecological equivalent of pumping iron. Biological systems are up and running. The water cycle churns the sky.
My life is churning, too. (Just keep breathing, in and out.)
