Mud Update

For all of you following the natural disaster known here as “an old-time winter,” I can tell you that we did not have a blizzard today. They had one scheduled, but it wouldn’t cooperate (thank God). In fact, the temperature got up into the high 40s, and everywhere the roadsides are full of running brown water. There was monumental melting, which is good — it has to happen sometime — and now our own road is a little dried out. A little, I say.

My wife is a staggering zombie of stress. That should tell you something, but then she’s been on a roll lately. After somehow avoiding a bad fall during weeks of walking on hard-frozen ice that melts and refreezes every 24 hours, renewing its slippery surface no matter how much you salt or chop it up the day before, today she almost fell flat on her face in the mud on the path to her studio. I guarantee you that would have been medieval.

Today the snow started melting in the driveway. Up until now, the mud has been confined to the road, which is up at the top of the hill and gets more sunlight. The driveway has been slippery, but hard.

Not any more…
