Road Trip Prep: SNOW! [Updated]

in Nature, New Mexico, Taos

This is the winter that never ends…

Our normal route from here to northeast Iowa takes us almost due north up through Limon, CO to Julesberg and then east to Ogallala, NE, from where it’s Interstate 80 all the way across Nebraska (Kearney, Grand Island, Lincoln, Omaha) and most of Iowa. Here in Taos, the air temp is in the 40s, and the wind will be blowing a steady 30-40 mph all day long and into the night, with gusts up to 60 mph! This is all due to something that shouldn’t even exist, a “winter” storm coming down into western Nebraska tonight. Ogallala, where we might be staying on Friday night, is supposed to get up to half a foot of snow from tonight through tomorrow, and the wind will be blowing almost as hard as it is here today.

All bets are off as to which route we take, in other words. This adds an element of drama and risk that I personally find quite invigorating. Guaranteed to freak out my wife, however. We may go all the way to Limon and then shoot east, or we may just forget most of Colorado altogether and leave Taos via the eastern route across the mountains.

I like going across Nebraska. That way is so clean and uncluttered.

UPDATE: Hah! Snow totals being downgraded as I write. Only a couple of inches predicted now, not half a foot. We may be able to take our usual route if I blindfold my wife.
