Finally a Man

Who knew??

It turns out there’s an advantage to growing up half-baked with a domineering, love-withholding mother and a mostly AWOL father. The trick, of course, is that you have to avoid suicide or jail and spend thousands of dollars on getting prodded to discover answers, and then you have to shovel shit until the handle breaks.

Taos Mountain & Old Mike Peak

I’ve been with my wife for roughly 30 years. Thirty years! Two days ago I looked at her and said, “I can’t get over how much fun it is to finally be living with someone who isn’t against me!” She understood, believe me she did. It’s not that I’ve thought she wasn’t there for me all those years, but that I’ve often (if not mostly) been literally possessed by an emotional dynamic that made me act as if she wasn’t. The “advantage” of growing up crazy, then, is that if you’re lucky, you get to end up in your 60s with a whole new life.

A new wife, too, for sure: the experience of the woman unbound by projected falsehoods is a shattering psycho-religious conversion. I crawl into bed hours after she’s fallen asleep, put my hand on her cute little butt, and die into a deep, electric mystery. NO ONE EVER TOLD ME ABOUT THIS, and if they had, I wouldn’t have understood.

She’s on her way to Alamosa now, a 90-mile drive across the vasties. I’m still dead and very, very grateful.

“put my hand on her cute little butt” THAT LINE MADE ME LAUGH.
I know what you mean, it just took me an few failed marriages to
find it out. I’ve got one of those “cute little butts” that i put my hand on when I crawl in bed and it’s just wonderful to know she’s
their. We work together in our wedding fotography biz and she keeps thing on track and is a good sounding board.
I am thankful to have met her.
