Free SSB for Mac OS X 10.5+: FarrFeed 1.0!

This really works, and it’s pretty danged cool.

“SSB” stands for Single Site Browser. FarrFeed 1.0 is a stand-alone application that opens this site (FarrFeed.com) and no other. If you’re running Mac OS X 10.5 and above, you can use this like you’d use any other application, but only to visit this website. (External links clicked within the SSB window will launch the destination page in your system’s default browser.)

Think of the SSB as a streamlined version of a normal Web Mozilla-based browser, in other words. It’s no slouch and even supports tabbed browsing within FarrFeed. From within the app, you can also create a MenuExtra SSB that exists only as an icon in your OS X system Status Bar next to other MenuExtras like the Clock and Spotlight, providing instant access to FarrFeed.com.

I “built” the app with Fluid, the free site-specific-browser creation tool for Mac OS X Leopard, and it couldn’t have been easier. If you’re on a current Mac, you can always download Fluid and make your own SSB for FarrFeed.com or any other website. (Future versions of the FarrFeed SSB will feature a custom icon instead of the generic Mac OS X application icon, but for now, what you see is what you get.)

Why would anyone want this? Try it and see!

FarrFeed 1.0 is a 3.7 MB download. Grab it right here and have fun.

NOTE: SSB creation apps (like Prism from Mozilla Labs) exist for Windows and Linux systems. If you build an Windows SSB for FarrFeed.com, send it to me and I’ll make it available.

That’s the idea. Just a little treat to make it easier to get here. I’m sorry I can’t offer this to Windows folks yet, but maybe someone will come through on that end.

The SSB actually uses less memory than a full-fledged browser, too, so there’s a practical reason to use it. I haven’t tried it as a MenuExtra SSB yet, but that sounds like the way to go.
