It was just that kind of a day, easy and loose.
The first thing is, I missed a phone call. Not that I minded, actually, but the thing was how it happened: I downloaded a free ringtone yesterday, the mating call of a rufous-sided towhee. Well, there are a lot of birds around here, so it didn’t dawn on me that it was my phone I was hearing until the caller had hung up. This is a great thing: not only does my cell phone sound like a bird, I don’t have to talk to people on it because I don’t realize it’s ringing. Why doesn’t everyone do this?

That pretty much set the tone for a short cycle of errands that followed, ending with a visit to our favorite organic nursery to buy a mess of herbs and flowers. How ludicrously normal. (If we’re not careful, they’ll run us out of town.) I spent the afternoon doing Web work for my analyst in Zurich and following the horror stories from Iran. The weather was absurdly perfect, 72 degrees F. here in Llano with 30 percent humidity. Nothing broke, and nobody I know died.
Yesterday the cat caught and ate a great big chipmunk, though, and that kind of gives me pause. It was like that back when I caught our previous cat, Hobbes, devouring a baby bunny rabbit without bothering to kill it first. These animals come from another dimension, all right.
If they were bigger, well, forget about it.
