New Drug

Somehow I played surf guitar for five hours today. I feel like I’ve been lifting weights or finished 100 pushups.

That’s about two and a half hours this morning and again tonight. Fortunately, I can do this inside the old adobe (18-24″ thick walls) and hardly anyone outside can hear. In case you’re wondering, my wife was gone for most of those hours [ahem]. Tonight I turned up the Twin Reverb a big notch and got that “real meat” sound. (I just made that up, but electric guitar players have to know what I mean.) All that time spent on just 11 songs I’ve learned so far, and I have a new favorite: “Haunted House of Rock” by Satan’s Pilgrims. Why, it’s… it’s… almost PUNK! This is like turning around and finding a favorite old girlfriend naked and ready on the bed, no questions asked. Or maybe that should be a favorite old friend’s knockout wife, the one you always wanted but couldn’t have, since I never actually played this music in a band before but now I will.

Yes, I am become ancient. But I don’t feel that way.

This is like joining a secret cult. In return for giving up thinking, you get the goat gland injections. It’s more than a fair trade, because my thoughts are scary, anyway.

Soak it ALL UP John…..I know the feeling. As an “ex-drummer” who played professionally for 14 years…then quit to get a Real Job and raise a family….my wife says I NEVER look happier than when I sit down to play the drums or even beat on the couch while friends play their guitars and jam…So I totally get it…and am Happy for YOU! Hope it all goes JUST as you see it happening….and you get that totally exhausted and fingers bloodied feeling with a HUGE Smile on your face! That’s what it’s all about….Break a Leg!

Steve : )
And that you get to do it all in Taos only makes it better in my opinion!

Well, if anyone would get it, I guess you would! Thank you.

No telling how long the band thing will go on — a couple of members are going places in the fall — but I should at least get to play twice in August and a couple of times before Xmas. After that, who knows?

This isn’t a money-making thing. This is a freaking spiritual quest.

At a private party on August 8th and another on the 9th. The latter may really be a public house concert, not sure yet. Will advise…

Other than that, I’ve heard of two dates in the fall. These things are constantly changing, however, so I’ll keep you posted!

This comment not related to this particular post… If you haven’t heard about this guy before (http://zerocurrency.blogspot.com/), you might find him interesting.
