My Rock & Roll Birthday

It doesn’t get much better than this.

Twice in 24 hours I got to perform and play loud, fast, instrumental rock & roll with three outrageously talented musicians. Yesterday’s gig was a house concert in Eldorado, outside of Santa Fe. The hosts were charming and generous. The setting was awesome. The breeze on the shaded “stage” was a thing of exquisite wonder and delight, and the music wasn’t bad, either: I got at least 3/4 of the chords right, woo-hoo! I still can’t believe these guys let me play with them and that nobody chopped up my guitar for kindling afterward.

Know what this is? Karma cleanup, that’s what. Being in the rock & roll moment (or any other) destroys time, too — perfect birthday medicine.

On the ride home, the views were outstanding and clear, the colors of the sky and rocks to die for. It was warm, around 90°, but bone-dry, so no sweating (I hate air conditioning in the car). My wife drove so I could drink tequila and relax. The traffic heading south from Taos was ridiculously heavy, reminding me of weekenders returning from Ocean City crossing the Bay Bridge in Maryland. When we climbed out of the canyon of the Rio Grande, the view of the gorge made her hit the brakes the way it does for me, because it always looks as if we’re falling in!

Back at the old run-down adobe on the side of the hill, it was 15° cooler than half an hour before, and under 70° inside. We had supper of birthday cake (thank you, Lisa!) and key lime pie, high-quality wretched excess on top of various intoxicants. I stayed up too late writing a stupid blog post and kept falling asleep in the bathtub. (If this isn’t what life is about, don’t tell me.)

I’ve been up now for three and a half hours, still groggy. Sitting here at my desk wearing shorts, and my bare feet are cold! — 63° in the living room at 11:20 a.m. Time to go sit out in the sun.

Coyotes last night, doves now chortling outside…
