Well, more like a walk, actually. Up the mesa and back, my usual.
Today it was mostly overcast and very cool, in the upper 50s when I started out. I had my camera with me and had a splendid good time. I love the way I can zoom in on small areas with the telephoto lens — it’s like being able to crop the view. There are always so many “signs” in the landscape to observe and capture. Here’s one of them from today:

There’s so much space in that shot and the others that will be appearing for the rest of the week on FotoFeed. That’s what it is about northern New Mexico vistas, the freaking depth — I can never get over how far one can see in the clean, dry air. It lifts my spirit so much and reminds me of why I wanted to come here. Stumbling around with my camera, doing whatever I please on a 60-minute walk where I never see another human being, is an almost unbearably fine thing to do.
When we move from our current residence — which we almost certainly will do — it needs to be somewhere I can walk like this, a place on the edge of the wild.

I’m SOOOOO jealous. Your photos make me smile and I hike vicariously through your descriptions of the NM wilderness. I’m stuck in the big city until our son graduates college in a few years and gets settled somewhere. Then mountains here we come! Keep the pics coming!
Well, don’t be so jealous of the location for this hike. There are occasional beer cans, but the view is amazing. On the whole, though, it’s pretty fantastic. Real wilderness is accessible in just a few minutes, and that IS why I came…
That is one of the many things I love about your spirit John……….you NEVER get tired or take for granted the insurmountable beauty around you….always mystified by it. Thank you for all the years of sharing and spreading it around!!
Such generous words! You’re very welcome. I am always mystified by it, too, and have felt that way in other places, but there are way fewer distractions here. Hoo boy.
14 people per square mile, and that’s with averaging in Taos and environs. Most of the damn place is pretty much empty of us two-leggeds, and it shows… Too bad I get so torn up over other things, but then there’s all this God-stuff here to scrape me out!
I love this shot! I always struggle to describe Northern NM with words that feel inadequate like expansive, open, endless; but you nailed this picture with depth. Truly beautiful. Thanks
You’re welcome, and it’s good to hear you say so.
