New Project: Watch the Evolution of a Song

Over 20 years ago I was a rock & roll songwriter. Not that anyone knew or cared that much, but I was, in my own peculiar way, eventually giving it up for more “sensible” pursuits like casting my own cat skull bronze sculptures. All that, however, is history. Now I’m playing electric 12-string in a surf band and feel like writing songs again.

Yesterday I was so inspired by hanging out in the country that I grabbed my G.D. Armstrong resophonic bouzouki, and the raw guts of a song fell out. It’s called “Raving Mystic” for now and showed up while I was jumping up and down in the back yard, I kid you not. After grabbing my Kodak Zi6 [see sidebar] to shoot a quick video for documentation, I realized that I had the makings of a brand new enterprise: if John the songwriter is coming back, why not let everyone watch?

I never intended this one to be public, but never mind. We’ll just make it the first in a series. Subsequent videos will be more deliberate, obviously, adding lyrics and maybe a partial mix, and you can watch me make art or freak out. When the song is finished, I’ll create a high-quality audio file and give it away here on FarrFeed.

Yes, I really oughta learn to play slide on that bouzouki. I’ll bet I know just the gent to ask for a lesson, too. It’s tuned GDGD and probably will be until the day I die, so what the hell?
