This one wasn’t even a close call. We drove out north of town to check out a rental possibility–an 1875 adobe ranch house with a wrap-around portal (that’s Spanish, por-TAHL, or porch) and absolutely stunning views.
Why wasn’t it close? The house is part of a family compound, and we need more privacy than that. In fact, I don’t see how they can realistically rent to strangers. It’s a real ranch, or was–the land is rented out for someone else’s cattle now–and while that did appeal to an old Boy Scout like me, I have to be able to play my electric guitar without freaking people out, and my wife would be practicing even more. These old adobes don’t have closets, either, and this one only had a shower, no bathtub! I have to have a bathtub, so… We thought it was a little pricey, too, for being such an old (but charming) place.
But damn, was it ever beautiful out there, even with the clouds today. Right up against the mountains, like something out of a dream. I took a few short video clips looking east and south. See what you think:

Oh, John, do you sometimes think you are quite grounded in your displacement?
The point is not settling for less than we need, and we do have a bathtub and privacy now.
