Johnny on the steps

Yes, it’s that time of year again. Only this time, I have a Medicare card in my wallet.

Because I’m very weird, I’m on the road for this birthday. Weirder still, I’m going to spend the night in Plainview, Texas. From there I could go to Amarillo tomorrow if I wanted, which isn’t something everyone can say or do, and I don’t know why they would. I probably won’t, either.

Somehow or other, though, I’m going to turn this trip into a birthday present for myself! I don’t think I’ll have much trouble: just do everything to excess, right? Throw beer bottles out the window, drive down the middle of the road, get that powdered sugar from those little donuts all over my shirt. Hell, I can do this.

But that’s why I’m going to Plainview. I have a hankering to hear scared whitefaces bawling all night in the cattle trailers parked outside. Yes, I made that up, although it could be true. You have to watch these people.

I also promised myself I’d go jump in the water at Barton Springs before I take off. A full-body baptizing in a huge natural spring seems like a good way to start the year. I hear it’s cold, too.

This should be interesting.

Really? Plainview??? I have to say I wasn’t hugely impressed, but then I went to Dimmit. Plainview is PARIS compared to Dimmit. :-)

And thank you for the birthday message…

Happy Birthday, and many joyful returns.

I know this is a sad and challenging time; just know that you have well-wishers rooting for you and the ones you love.

Cousin Karen!

Thank you so much. Teresa is holding up well emotionally, but slipping fast. Difficult times all around, however long they last.
