True Animal Stories You May Not Have Heard

If the post has to do with animals, this is where it lands. On the first page alone, you’ll find links to stories about bears, cows, cats, geckos, bluebirds, roadrunners, and jackrabbits. On the next page, I’ve got bees, chipmunks, ravens, magpies, a hypothetical bobcat, and a bunch more cats. Moving on, you’ll find elk, hummingbirds, sheep, goats, assorted bugs, and cows (again). I could go on, but you get the idea.

Some of these posts have photos, too. Enjoy! – JHF

Leftover Coyotes

These were going to go on FotoFeed, but three days of coyotes there is enough. Lucky you, you get to see them now. What happened was, we were at Orillo Verde near Pilar, driving slowly south. My wife spotted a coyote on the other side of the Rio Grande, and we followed along for about [...]

The Necessity of Bears and Exercise

by John Hamilton Farr on September 25, 2011 · 7 comments

It’s a good time to go for a hike in the mountains: word is, the bears are on the move… Because of the drought, they can’t find the berries they like to fatten up on and have to range farther afield. I imagine it’s not just the berries, either. In lush years, there’d be more [...]

Life in Cowtime

by John Hamilton Farr on April 14, 2011 · 5 comments

in Animals

Sometimes you don’t have to leave your living room to get close to nature, it just rubs right up against your window. Cows have come through here before. Long ago the dead landlord had this house wired for dish TV, and one stumbled over the coaxial cable in the middle of the night and shut [...]

The Smartest Cat in the World

by John Hamilton Farr on March 27, 2011 · 8 comments

Callie the Wonder Cat is smarter than your cat, so just get used to it. This is the smartest cat I’ve ever seen, although maybe being preceded by Hobbes the Wonder Cat tilts the scales a bit. In Hobbes’ case, “wonder cat” was satirical, but he had a beautiful soul. Come to think of it, [...]

Bluebird on the Wire

by John Hamilton Farr on November 14, 2010 · 5 comments

in Animals

We have bluebirds here all year. The western and mountain varieties, of course. That was one of the strangest things to bear witness to after moving here from Maryland. Back on the good ole Eastern Shore, bluebirds were the proverbial harbingers of spring. It was always a joy to see them build their nests in [...]

Gecko Rescue

by John Hamilton Farr on September 18, 2010 · 4 comments

in Animals

My room on the third floor of the Homestead Suites hotel in Austin was home to more than just me, I discovered two nights before I left, namely a tiny gecko (two inches long) in the overhead fluorescent light fixture. At first I thought a previous guest had placed a rubber lizard there for a [...]

Double Roadrunner Birthday

by John Hamilton Farr on August 16, 2010 · 4 comments

in Animals

The first one just ran across the road about 20 miles outside of Austin as I was heading back to Taos. That was pretty funny, though, like encountering a chimney sweep sweeping a chimney. What else was the bird supposed to do? He (?) ran all the way across the road without stopping or flying, [...]

Wildlife Report

by John Hamilton Farr on May 6, 2010 · 5 comments

The bears are awake, according to the paper, but no, I haven’t seen any. The last bear on these premises was the one who decided to try to climb the plum tree out front a few years ago and broke it down to the ground. I didn’t see that one, either, but nothing else could [...]

Cat Break [Updated]

by John Hamilton Farr on March 1, 2010 · 2 comments

in Animals

This may show up on FotoFeed eventually, but I thought everyone deserved a look at Callie the New Mexico Wonder Cat right now! UPDATE: Must remember not to leave comments on political blogs when I’m angry at my mother, so to speak. Or the old man. Yes, I know. I only visit three or four [...]
