When it comes right down to it, though, this is the only thing I want my country to do. That’s it, give us health care. If they have to stop building multi-million dollar remotely piloted high-tech drones to blow up brown people in mud huts on the other side of the world, so be it.

Lesson of Iran

Whatever else is happening today pales in comparison to the universal truth unfolding in the streets of Iranian cities. Here’s a translation of a street chant from Tehran: “I welcome death I welcome death But not subjugation But not subjugation” Now that is change to believe in… The worst any despots can do is torture [...]

Better Post on Why We’re Screwed

Well, screwed for the time being, anyway. Yes, I deleted that last post. I don’t know a damn thing about economics, as anyone can plainly see. Frank Rich may not either, but his Sunday column for the NY Times goes directly to one thing most of us do understand: The new president who vowed to [...]

Could it be any more bizarre? What did we do to deserve this?? Oh yeah, right… Be that as it may, I say keep your eyes on McCain. Whenever I see a video of the guy, I can’t believe how warped he is from the pressure of all the lying. He needs a new career [...]

Too dark, pre-occupied, self-critical, and cranky to write much this week. That, and watching McCain disintegrate against the backdrop of the Great Unwinding is so engrossing and entertaining, who has time for anything else? This is all just amazing. There IS a God, as the saying goes, and she’s winding up for the big pitch. [...]

What’s not to like? First off, not everyone is stupid! In fact, most of us aren’t, and this morning it’s bringing a smile to my face. Not worried about the economy, either. Our way of life is unsustainable: if things are falling apart, that’s why, and they need to fall apart. So let’s run this [...]

Wood is Good

We’re still looking for a rental with more solar gain and a better woodstove. I’m feeling lucky, too. I like heating with wood, athough it won’t do for the studio my wife needs for her glossy-black baby grand piano. In the long run, I think we’ll have to buy some land and build a couple [...]

TV Pushed My Buttons

I must be one weird bird, but what can ya do? I just watched half of a TV show called “Top Chef” on the Bravo channel with my wife and her sister and her husband, and I swear it hurt my feelings. I’m still trying to sort this one out, but I just don’t get [...]

Dubuque is a fascinating old city with lots of character perched high on the limestone bluffs overlooking the mighty Mississippi. (The river is quite high now, too.) In the image below, you’re looking north from Eagle Point Park. The opposite bank is Wisconsin. While we were standing there, we saw three pelicans fly by. Yes, [...]

“Obliterate Them”?

Oh that Hillary (addressing the topic of Iran)… Some words should never be uttered, not even in the heat of a national political campaign. If you like that kind of language, though, this is what you’re signing up for: Post-blast corpses in Hiroshima, Japan This photo and others like it were only recently released. They’re [...]
