Delayed Spring?

Some of that global warming would be nice around here. We’ve been running about 15 degrees below average pretty consistently for weeks and weeks, with howling winds to boot. There were several inches on snow on the ground in the first week of May. Fairly cringe-worthy stuff, except that we absolutely need the moisture. Six [...]

High Desert Freeze

It’s a good thing I wasn’t planning to take a bath, because the tub was occupied. Not that I could have anyway—no hot water! Why was that, you ask, and did I sic the cat on the visitor? Also, why did my neighbor drive all the way across town and come home with a chicken [...]

My Snow Day So Far

by John Hamilton Farr on February 1, 2011 · 5 comments

Oh, I just had to say it, didn’t I? Late last night, after all of three flakes fell on dry, frigid Taos, I tweeted my prediction that there’d be no more snow, har-har. Typical wise-ass snark on my part, only this time I’d forgotten that one of my Twitter followers is the “warning coordination meteorologist” [...]

Again, the Wind..

At least they lowered the estimated speed of the “frequent gusts” tomorrow from 70 mph like I’d read earlier. That was disconcerting, but it also made me laugh. Nature rules as the weather just goes BOOM here, swinging wildly from one extreme to the other. Instead, the weather people tell me the wind will only [...]

Winterlude

This is what it looked like three days ago. That’s heavy wet snow coming down. Then it got down to single-digits and froze all the slush. Most of that melted over the last two days, which were sunny and spring-like, except for semi-frozen mud in all the shady places. More snow predicted for Wedneday. Springtime [...]

Late Winter Clouds Over Taos

Quite often I drop whatever I’m doing and walk outside with my camera. To get this shot and today’s FotoFeed, I had to hike a couple hundred yards through the mud and cactus in my Crocs twice, but it was worth it. The scale is what constantly gets me. The overwhelming immensity of it all.

Almost Spring

We had the windows and front door open for a long time late Sunday afternoon, airing the place out. That worked out pretty well, since the wood stove was still cranking. Below is a view of what would be the front steps, if we had any. I’m posting this at just a little before 3:00 [...]

Winter Storm Warning [Updated]

Egad, I seem to be incubating a head cold. Hopefully not, but perhaps instructive, given recent events. At any rate, I’m shutting down early tonight. Might as well, because the following is forecast for tomorrow: … Winter Storm Warning in effect from midnight tonight to 6 am MDT Thursday… The National Weather Service in Albuquerque [...]
